A Conversation with E.J. Dionne and Rick Perlstein

Bestselling author and Georgetown University professor E.J. Dionne tells the story of the fracturing of the GOP in his acclaimed new book, Why the Right Went Wrong: Conservatism—from Goldwater to the Tea Party and Beyond. In doing so, he draws on bestselling author Rick Perlstein’s Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus, a now classic prizewinning 2001 account of the origins of today’s conservatism in the tumult of the putatively liberal 1960s.

Dionne and Perlstein discussed the 2016 presidential election, the roots of today’s disquiet in the disquiet of earlier times, and the question of whether even staunch Democrats and progressives should wish for a less divisive Republican Party. Paul Elie, author and Berkley Center senior fellow—and editor of Before the Storm—moderated. A reception and book signing followed.
