Guest Lecture: Rep. Walter Jones on Peacemaking Inspired by Faith

October 25, 2011
4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. EDT

Representative Walter Jones of North Carolina joined the class to discuss his own faith-based conversion on the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rep. Jones detailed his own regrets for initial support for the Iraq war, and talked at length about the penance he currently undertakes by writing personal notes to families of each service member killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jones has become a leading voice in Congress calling for an end to the conflict in Afghanistan, and repeatedly worked across partisan lines in the process. He has been especially critical of the manipulation of intelligence in the run-up to the Iraq War, and has taken a variety of steps to strengthen Congressional oversight of war powers. A Catholic, Rep. Jones talked at length about how his own faith has guided his politics, giving him courage to work for peace.
