In the United States and many other countries, debates about homosexuality have been prominent in the public sphere for decades. In China they are new. What was once a taboo topic is now emerging in traditional and social media. And as in the United States, controversy has assumed a religious dimension centered on Christianity. Some members of a growing and increasingly vocal evangelical community—including popular figures in the world of entertainment—have publicly condemned homosexuality as sinful. Huang Ping, assistant professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Berkley Center postdoctoral fellow, discussed how these developments are transforming the cultural, social, and religious landscape in China in new and fascinating ways.
