Mahmood Mamdani on Islam and the West

October 26, 2006
Location: Healy Hall Riggs Library Map

Mahmood Mamdani of Columbia University gave a lecture on current tensions between the West and the Muslim world. His presentation and the discussion that followed centered on the role of historical legacies in fostering mistrust of the United States and European powers in Muslim-majority nations, and on the climate of fear spawned by September 11, 2001 and the Bush administration's so-called "War on Terror." Efforts to deepen interreligious dialogue, he argued, cannot ignore geopolitical realities in the Middle East and around the world.

This event was cosponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.
