Film Screening: Journey into Europe: Islam, Immigration, and Identity

The current state of Islam in Europe, and Islam’s role in the development of European history and civilization, is a subject of constant debate. The conversation is often shaped by misinformation and mistrust, leaving many unsure of Islam’s place in the political and social future of the European continent.

Anthropologist Akbar Ahmed produced and directed Journey Into Europe: Islam, Immigration, and Identity to explore these questions and offer solutions for coexistence from the ground up. The film shares perspectives of some of Europe's most prominent figures, including presidents, prime ministers, archbishops, chief rabbis, grand muftis, heads of right-wing parties, as well as European citizens from a variety of backgrounds.

The screening was followed by a discussion with the film's director, moderated by Georgetown professor Tamara Sonn.

This event was cosponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.

Ambassador Akbar Ahmed is the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies in American University's School of International Service and a trustee for the World Faiths Development Dialogue. Ahmed belonged to Pakistan's senior civil service and was Pakistan's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Ahmed is a member of the Washington Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council and is a member of the International Advisory Board for The Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at The Queen’s University of Belfast. Ahmed consistently writes for a number of popular news publications around the globe, including a weekly column in the Daily Times, a leading English-language Pakistani newspaper.

Dr. Tamara Sonn is Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani Professor in the History of Islam and director of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.
