The Light in Her Eyes

Location: Berkley Center Third Floor Conference Room Map

This film screening featured the documentary The Light in Her Eyes (2011), introduced by filmmakers Julia Meltzer and Laura Nix. The film follows Houda al-Habash, a conservative Muslim preacher who founded a Qur’an school for girls in Damascus 30 years ago. She witnesses a surprising cultural shift as women increasingly claim space in their mosques. Shot right before the uprising in Syria, The Light in Her Eyes offers an extraordinary portrait of a leader who challenges the women of her community to live according to Islam, without giving up their dreams.

This event was co-sponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and the World Faiths Development Dialogue.
