Merrill van der Walt

Dr. Merrill van der Walt is a paleontologist at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Origins Centre, where she works as an education specialist and manager of new business and strategic partnerships. After a number of years in academia, she joined The Origins Centre, one of South Africa’s premier museums that explores human evolution scientifically, culturally, and socially and celebrates South African heritage. In her current position, she works to create programming that shares the Centre’s educational resources and gets out their message, and to that end, she works to develop the Jesuit Institute’s “Believing in Creation and Evolution” program with her former chaplain, Fr. Peter Knox, SJ. A lifelong Catholic, she graduated with her bachelors of science in genetics and statistics with honors, completed a Masters in evolution, and earned her PhD in paleontology.
