R. Scott Appleby
R. Scott Appleby is the John M. Regan Jr. Director of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame. His research is in comparative religious movements and religious history, and he focuses on the roots of religious violence and the potential for peacebuilding. Appleby was previously Co-Director of the Fundamentalism Project. He is the author or editor of several books, including The Ambivalence of the Sacred: Religion, Violence and Reconciliation (Rowman & Littlefield, 2000) and Spokesmen for the Despised: Fundamentalist Leaders of the Middle East (University of Chicago, 1997). Appleby holds a PhD from the University of Chicago. In March 2006 he participated in the Berkley Center’s Conference on the New Religious Pluralism in World Politics, speaking on the topic, "Building Sustainable Peace: The Roles of Local and Transnational Religious Actors."
