Berkley Center Staff

Melody Fox Ahmed | Assistant Director for Programs and Operations

Melody joined the Berkley Center in June 2006 and serves as the Assistant Director for Programs and Operations. Her responsibilities include overall Center management, student programs such as the Junior Year Abroad Network and Undergraduate Fellows, and interfaith outreach. Previously she worked at the Corporate Executive Board and with the Buxton Initiative, an interfaith dialogue organization in Washington, DC, and studied and worked in Spain, Mexico, and Brazil. She received her B.A. from Vanderbilt University and her M.A. in Global, International, and Comparative History from Georgetown University, with a focus on Latin America and the Muslim world.

Paul Beccio | Ruby on Rails Software Developer

Paul Beccio joined the Berkley Center as a Software Developer in May 2007. Before Georgetown, Paul developed web-based applications for government agencies, Internet start-ups and non-profit organizations. He studied English and History at the University of Maryland as well as American Indian Studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson.


Erin Coleman | Events & Projects Coordinator

Erin Coleman joined the Berkley Center as the Events and Projects Coordinator in March 2011. She graduated from Georgetown in 2009 with a B.A. in English and Italian and a minor in Government. She is also a graduate student in Georgetown's Communication, Culture, and Technology Program, focusing on globalization and its impact on intercultural communication and identity.

A.J. Nolte | Project Associate

A.J. Nolte joined the RFP at the beginning of October 2012, after two years as a research assistant at the Center for Complex Operations, National Defense University. Previously, he worked for Ideal Innovations, a defense contracting firm based in Arlington, Virginia. Currently a Ph.D. candidate in World Politics at the Catholic University of America (CUA), A.J. obtained his M.A. from CUA in 2009. He received a B.A. in Politics from Messiah College in 2006 and studied at Oxford University’s Wycliffe Hall while at Messiah.

Jamie Scott | Program Associate

Jamie Scott joined the Berkley Center as the Program Associate in June 2010. He graduated from Georgetown in May 2010 with a B.A. in Government and minors in Anthropology and History. He is enrolled in the master's degree in Public Policy program at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute.

Erin Taylor | Director of Communications

Erin Taylor is director of communications at the Berkley Center, a position she has held since March 2012. Previously, Erin served as deputy director of communications at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She has also worked for the British Consulate-General in New York and the German Embassy in Washington. Erin is a graduate of The George Washington University and was an Alexander von Humboldt German Chancellor Scholar in Berlin.

Kyle Vander Meulen | Senior Project Associate

Kyle Vander Meulen joined the Berkley Center in January 2011. Before coming to the Center, he completed his master's studies in Divinity at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Kyle has interned for former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and for three years worked as an assistant to Michael Novak at the American Enterprise Institute. He holds a B.A. in Religion with a Secondary Field in Public Health from the George Washington University.

Amy Vander Vliet | Web Editor and Database Manager

Amy Vander Vliet joined the Berkley Center in September 2006 and serves as a Web Editor and Database Manager. She previously worked at the Center as a research assistant, contributed to the report “Faith Communities Engage the HIV/AIDS Crisis: Lessons Learned and Paths Forward,” and has offered editing support for numerous other Center publications. She received her M.A. in Security Studies from Georgetown.

Noora Al-Sindi

Noora Al-Sindi is a graduate student in the Masters of Public Policy program at Georgetown, class of 2013. She is a graduate research assistant at the Berkley Center's Religion and Global Development Program and is contributing to publications in a number of development areas, including women, peacemaking and religious institutions.

Sarah Amos

Sarah Amos is an undergraduate student in the School of Foreign Service, class of 2013. At the the Berkley Center, she works as a communications and design assistant on center publications.

Adelaide Bryan

Adelaide Bryan is a full-time graduate student in the Masters of Arab Studies program at Georgetown, class of 2014. At the Berkley Center, she works as a research assistant with Professor Madigan on the Building Bridges project.

Paul Bucala

Paul Bucala is an undergraduate majoring in History and Government in Georgetown College, class of 2015. He is a research assistant at the Berkley Center where he writes articles for the country pages on religious issues and politics in the Middle East.

Louis Cona

Louis Cona is an undergraduate student studying Government and Philosophy in Georgetown College, class of 2015. At the Berkley Center, he works as a research assistant for the Religious Freedom Project tasked with coordinating scholarship and events for the Christianity and Freedom Initiative.

VP Dao

VP Dao is an undergraduate student of the Class of 2015 in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown, majoring in international political economy. He is a research assistant for the Religious Freedom Project at the Berkley Center.

Julie Espinosa

Julie Espinosa graduated from Georgetown's Communication, Culture, and Technology Master's program in 2011. At the Berkley Center, she works as a video assistant on the media team.

Michael Fischer

Michael Fischer is a class of 2013 student in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown, studying International Political Economy and Classics. He is a research assistant for Professor Banchoff at the Berkley Center, working on Religion in US Politics, the Catholic Church in World Affairs, the Jesuits and Globalization Project, and the Luce International Affairs network.

Richa Goyal

Richa Goyal is an undergraduate in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown, class of 2013. She is a Design and Communications Assistant at the Berkley Center, responsible for the design production of reports, fliers, posters, and website features.

Emma Hinchliffe

Emma Hinchliffe is a student in the College at Georgetown majoring in Government with minors in French and Journalism, class of 2015. She is a communications research assistant at the Berkley Center.

Trishla Jain

Trishla Jain is a member of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service class of 2015 and is majoring in Science, Technology, and International Affairs with a concentration in Biotechnology and Global Health. She is from Dallas, Texas, and works as a research assistant at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs for the Interfaith Service project.

Aya Kellam

Aya Kellam is a member of the class of 2015 in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, majoring in Regional and Comparative Studies with a focus on Asia. She is a research assistant at the Berkley Center and works on developing the center's online resources, including its Country Resource webpages.

Kathleen Kelley

Kathleen Kelley is an undergraduate student in the School of Nursing and Health Studies majoring in International Health with a minor in Arabic, class of 2014. At the Berkley Center, Kathleen works as a research assistant on the the Religion and Development Database.

Brendan Kirwin

Brendan Kirwin is a class of 2013 master's student in the Communication, Culture, and Technology program at Georgetown. At the Berkley Center he manages the audio/video production team.

Anne Kjeldgaard

Anne Kjeldgaard is a Culture and Politics major in Georgetown's School of Foreign Service, class of 2013. She is a research assistant at the Berkley Center and works on the Religion and Development Database.

Stephen Levy

Stephen Levy completed his undergraduate work in the School of Foreign Service's International Politics major in December of 2012. He is a Research Assistant at the Berkley Center, working with Professor Banchoff on resources on the Catholic Church and the Society of Jesus.

Andy Lin

Andy Lin is an undergraduate studying government and Arabic in Georgetown College, class of 2015. As a research assistant at the Berkley Center, he works on the country page resources and the blasphemy laws project.

Javier Peña

Javier Peña is a part-time research assistant for the Religious Freedom Project at the Berkley Center. He graduated from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service in May 2012 with a BS in International Politics.

Kieran Raval

Kieran Raval is a member of the class of 2013, studying political philosophy and theology in Georgetown College. At the Berkley Center, he works as a research assistant with the Religious Freedom Project.

Karen Rupprecht

Karen Rupprecht is a Ph.D. candidate in Georgetown's Department of Government. At the Berkley Center, she works as a research assistant for Professor Timothy Shah.

Sania Salman

Sania Salman is an undergraduate in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University majoring in Science, Technology, and International affairs, class of 2014. At the Berkley Center, she works as a research assistant for Professor Cesari, researching and writing on the democratization in Islamic countries.

Madison Schramm

Madison Schramm is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Government at Georgetown. At the Berkley Center, she works as Dr. Thomas Farr's research assistant and provides research and administrative support for the Religious Freedom Project.

Bennett Seftel

Bennett Seftel is a master's student studying International Law and Global Security at Georgetown. At the Berkley Center, Bennett works as a research assistant for Professor Banchoff, focusing on human rights, international law, and contemporary affairs.

Elizabeth Stoddard

Elisabeth Stoddard is a full-time graduate student in the Master's of Conflict Resolution program at Georgetown, class of 2014. At the Berkley Center, she works as a Research Assistant with the Religious Freedom Project.

Kevin Sullivan

Kevin Sullivan is a member of the class of 2014 studying International Political Economy in the School of Foreign Service and receiving a Certificate in Religion, Ethics, and World Affairs from the Berkley Center. He is a research assistant for the Religious Freedom Project at the Berkley Center, working most often on publication preparation and editing.

Lauren Whitehead

Lauren Whitehead is a full-time graduate student in the Masters in Global Human Development at Georgetown, class of 2014, where she focuses on social enterprise and humanitarian emergencies, earning the Global Social Enterprise Fellowship and Refugees & Humanitarian Emergencies certificate at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. As a research assistant at the Berkley Center, she works with the World Faiths Development Dialogue to conduct research and site visits pertaining to cases studies for the Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Pilot Project in six cities around the country.

Audrey Wilson

Audrey Wilson is a Culture and Politics major in the School of Foreign Service, class of 2014. She works as a research assistant at the Berkley Center, focusing on religion and development, and participated in the Junior Year Abroad Network in the fall of 2012 while studying in Alanya, Turkey.

Amanda Wynter

Amanda Wynter is a Government student concentrating in Political Theory in the College at Georgetown, class of 2014. She is a research assistant at the Berkley Center working with Professor Kessler on the Law, Religion, and Values project.

Marissa Amendolia

Marissa Amendolia graduated from Georgetown in 2011 with a major in English and a minor in Italian. Avi Asher-Schapiro

Avi Asher-Schapiro has been a Berkley Center research associate since 2012, working on the Global Liberal Education Initiative and continuing research on religious political mobilization. He graduated in 2010 from Georgetown’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service with a regional concentration in the Middle East and a certificate in Christian-Muslim Understanding. From 2010 to 2011 Avi worked as a research assistant at the Berkley Center, expanding the Middle East and Islamic portions of the Center’s Knowledge Resources. In 2012, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Cairo, Egypt; his Fulbright research examined Coptic Christian political mobilization during Egypt’s democratic transition.

Jehan Balba

Jehan Balba received her master's in Security Studies from Georgetown. She worked at the Berkley Center as a Henry Luce Foundation Research Fellow in 2008, and co-authored the report "Inspired by Faith: A Background Report 'Mapping' Social Economic Development Work in the Muslim World".

Sarah Balistreri

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sarah graduated from Georgetown College in 2012. She worked as a research assistant at the Berkley Center and wrote for the Junior Year Abroad Network from Valparaíso, Chile, in the fall of 2010.

Michael Bayer graduated from Georgetown with a master's in 2007. Deven Comen

Deven Comen graduated from Georgetown College in 2012 with a major in Government. Meredith Connelly was a master's degree in Foreign Service student concentrating in International Conflict Management with a certificate in Refugee and Humanitarian Emergencies. Ilan Cooper

Ilan Cooper graduated from Georgetown University in 2010 with a M.A in Conflict Resolution. He worked at the Berkley Center as a research assistant from 2008 until graduation, focusing on the role of local transitional justice mechanisms in sub-Saharan Africa.

Nicole Cordeau

Jenna Cossman

Jenna Cossman graduated from Georgetown in 2009. She was a Berkley Center Undergraduate Fellow in 2007 and also worked as a co-student director of events for the center from 2006 until graduation.

Giuliana DeAngelis

Giuliana DeAngelis is a member of the class of 2014 in Georgetown's School of Foreign Service and is pursuing a Certificate in Religion, Ethics, and World Affairs. Giuliana is currently studying abroad as a Fulbright-Hays Scholar through the ACC Intensive Language and Culture Program at Minzu University in Beijing. During her study abroad, Giuliana is conducting an independent research project, interviewing locals to better understand the current dynamics of cultural exchange between China and the United States.

Jonathan Sidney Deutsch

Jonathan Deutsch graduated from Georgetown College in 2007. He joined the Berkley Center when it was founded in 2006 and continued there until graduation as an undergraduate research assistant.

Caroline Diemer

Caroline Diemer is a member of Georgetown College’s class of 2014. At the Berkley Center, Caroline works as a research assistant for Professor Kessler, looking into conflicts between law and religion across the world.

Lili Dodderidge

Lili Dodderidge is an English major in Georgetown's class of 2013. She worked as a research assistant for the Berkley Center during the fall of 2010.

Julie Espinosa

Rebecca Davis Gibbons worked at the Berkley Center as a graduate research assistant during the 2006-2007 academic year. She graduated from Georgetown with an M.A. in Security Studies in 2007 and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Government.

Walker Grooms

Kieran Halloran

Kieran Halloran is a junior in the School of Foreign Service majoring in Regional Studies comparing Africa and Latin America and pursuing a certificate in International Development. Academically, he is focusing on peace and conflict in the two regions and the role of faith organizations in development. He is currently studying in Arusha, Tanzania at the Nyerere Center for Peace Studies at the East Africa Community Headquarters. Kieran is a Knight of Columbus and was a research assistant for the Berkley Center’s Religious Freedom Project and World Faiths Development Dialogue before going abroad.

Tom Han worked at the Berkley Center as a research assistant during the 2007-2008 academic year. He graduated from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service in 2010 with a major in International Political Economy.

Peter Henne

Peter Henne is a doctoral candidate in Georgetown University's Government Department and a research associate with the Religious Freedom Project at the Berkley Center. Henne's research focuses on religion and politics, specifically as it relates to political violence and foreign policy. His scholarly work has been published in the Journal of Peace Research, Politics and Religion, and Terrorism and Political Violence; he also blogs for the Huffington Post.

Eric Hoerger

Eric Hoerger graduated from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service in 2012. He was a 2009 Berkley Center Undergraduate Fellow, working on the group's report on new social media and interreligious/intercultural understanding.

Jessica Holland

Jessica Holland graduated from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service in 2011. She was a Berkley Center Undergraduate Fellow in 2008, working on the group’s report on interreligious marriage, and worked as a research assistant focusing on events and communications.

Sarabrynn Hudgins is a master's student in Georgetown's Security Studies Program, class of 2013. At the Berkley Center, she works as a research assistant with the Religious Freedom Project.

Aamir Hussain

Aamir Hussain is a Government major and Theology minor with a pre-medical concentration in the Georgetown University Class of 2014. He is originally from Farmington, CT. Aamir is a Muslim of Indian background, and speaks Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi-Urdu. For the spring 2013 semester, he is studying at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At Georgetown, Aamir is the co-president of the Georgetown Interfaith Student Council, is actively involved in both the Muslim and Hindu Students Associations, and works on the Georgetown Emergency Response Medical Service (GERMS) as an EMT-B. His nickname is "The Pun-isher" due to his penchant for making bad puns.

Nicholas Ingaciola

Nicholas Ingaciola graduated with a joint B.S./M.A. degree in Security Studies from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service. He worked as a research assistant at the Berkley Center from 2006-2008.

Sheronda Jarrett

Sheronda Jarrett is a member of the class of 2014 in Georgetown's School of Nursing and Health Studies. She worked as a Berkley Center research assistant during the 2011-2012 academic year.

Kyle Layman

Kyle Layman graduated from Georgetown in 2008 with an M.A. in Democracy and Governance Studies. He worked at the Berkley Center from 2007-2008 as a graduate research assistant and worked on the preparation of various Berkley Center publications, including Democracy and the New Religious Pluralism (Oxford University Press, 2007).

Seungah Lee graduated from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service in 2012. She spent the fall 2010 semester studying abroad in Amman, Jordan, where she wrote for the Junior Year Abroad Network.

Paige Lovejoy

Paige Lovejoy graduated from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service in 2012. In fall 2010 Paige took a leave of absence and designed her own study abroad program in South America, spending a month in Peru, a month in Chile, and a month in Argentina. Throughout her travels, she wrote for the Junior Year Abroad Network.

Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Sara Singha is a doctoral candidate in the Theology Department at Georgetown University. Sara does comparative work between Christianity and Islam, and she is writing her dissertation on religion and politics in South Asia. At the Berkley Center, she has worked on the Undergraduate and Interreligious Understanding Project and is a Commissioned Scholar on Pakistan for the Christianity and Freedom Project.

Kathleen Soriano-Taylor

Kathleen is a Junior in the College, majoring in English, with minors in French and Government. On the Hilltop, she is involved with the Georgetown Voice and works as a graphic designer for the Berkley Center. Her interest in languages was sparked by her parents; her dad grew up in Germany, her mother on the little island of Guam. Oddly enough, she and her sister both gravitated to French, prompting her to study in Strasbourg, one of the capitals of the European Union.

Melina Soroka

Melinda Soroka graduated from Georgetown College in 2010. She worked as a research assistant at the Berkley Center during her senior year, conducting video interviews of Georgetown students on the topics of religious freedom and religious diversity and updating the Knowledge Resources database with information on Jewish NGOs and Israeli political and religious leaders.

Colin Steele

Colin Steele graduated from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service in 2012 and earned the Religion, Ethics, and World Affairs certificate. In 2010-2011, Colin participated in the Berkley Center's Junior Year Abroad Network from both Turkey and Ireland. In 2012, Colin participated as a fellow in the first annual Millennial Values Symposium and worked on the Jesuits and Globalization Project with Professors Banchoff and Casanova.

Ella Street

Ella Street is currently a Ph.D candidate in Georgetown's Department of Government. She was a teaching assistant for Jean Bethke Elshtain's course Faith, Ethics, and America's Role in the World during the Fall 2010 semester.

Kevin Sullivan

Kevin Sullivan is a member of the class of 2014 studying International Political Economy in the School of Foreign Service and receiving a Certificate in Religion, Ethics, and World Affairs from the Berkley Center. He is a research assistant for the Religious Freedom Project at the Berkley Center, working most often on publication preparation and editing.

Samuel Tadros received his master's from Georgetown's Democracy and Governance program. He worked as a research assistant during the 2009-2010 academic year, and has written for multiple journals and newspapers including the Wall Street Journal and the American Thinker and has also written numerous blogs and Op-eds about the liberalization in Egypt.

Elizabeth Tenety worked at the Berkley Center as a research assistant from 2006 to 2007. She graduated from Georgetown in 2007 and currently works for the Washington Post's On Faith website.

Caryl Tuma

Caryl Tuma worked at the Berkley Center as a research assistant from 2008-2010, focusing her research on just war theory with Professor Eric Patterson. She graduated from Georgetown's Conflict Resolution Program with an M.A. in 2010.

Xander Vagg

Alexander Vagg received his M.A. in Georgetown’s International Law and Global Security Program in 2012. He was a research assistant at the Berkley Center, focusing on two-track diplomacy, international law, and security studies.

Amy Vander Vliet

Amy Vander Vliet joined the Berkley Center in September 2006 and serves as a Web Editor and Database Manager. She previously worked at the Center as a research assistant, contributed to the report “Faith Communities Engage the HIV/AIDS Crisis: Lessons Learned and Paths Forward,” and has offered editing support for numerous other Center publications. She received her M.A. in Security Studies from Georgetown.

Shuang Wen

Shuang Wen is a doctoral candidate at Georgetown in the Department of History. She has worked at the Berkley Center since 2009 on the Religion in China and the US Project.

Audrey Wilson

Audrey Wilson is a Culture and Politics major in the School of Foreign Service, class of 2014. She works as a research assistant at the Berkley Center, focusing on religion and development, and participated in the Junior Year Abroad Network in the fall of 2012 while studying in Alanya, Turkey.

Eric Wind

Eric Wind graduated from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service in 2009. He was a 2007 Berkley Center Undergraduate Fellow, working on a report on the advocacy of religious groups.
