Marc F. Plattner is co-editor of the Journal of Democracy, vice-president for research and studies at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), and co-director of the International Forum for Democratic Studies. He served as NED's director of program from 1984-89. During the 2002-03 academic year he was a visiting professor at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute. He has previously been a Fellow at the National Humanities Center in North Carolina; Advisor on Economic and Social Affairs at the United States Mission to the United Nations; program officer at the Century Foundation (formerly the Twentieth Century Fund); and managing editor of The Public Interest, a quarterly journal on public policy. Plattner is the author of Democracy Without Borders? Global Challenges to Liberal Democracy (2007) and Rousseau's State of Nature (1979).
