Berkley Center Annual Report 2013-2014

December 1, 2014

This report outlines the Berkley Center's major activities over the past year, all supporting the Berkley Center's efforts to build knowledge and promote dialogue around a core theme: the potential for religion to serve peace and justice, even as it is remains bound up with conflict and oppression around the world. Two highlights: in November, Georgetown and the center hosted the Opus Prize, a $1 million honor bestowed on a faith-inspired peacemaker. The award went to a Muslim, Sakena Yacoobi, founder of an NGO that serves women and children in war-torn Afghanistan. In December, a center delegation led by professors Tom Farr and Timothy Shah had an audience with Pope Francis. The occasion was a Religious Freedom Project conference in Rome that addressed the persecution of Christians in the Middle East and elsewhere.
