Peace Is the Future

Author: Katherine Marshall

September 8, 2014

In this speech at a panel on "The Economy in the Service of Peace," Katherine Marshall addresses three questions at the intersection of economic and peace. First, how are peace and development linked? Second, what questions are most actively debated? Third, looking forward, how can religious engagement on inequality and inequity be enhanced? In doing so she touches on key issues such as the role of the state, international development aid, and human rights. She concludes by arguing for principled engagement of the many different actors involved, characterized by a willingness to engage, to learn from each other, and to be transformed. Marshall delivered the speech at the Community of Sant'Egidio's twenty-eighth International Meeting of People and Religions, held in Antwerp, Belgium and focused on the theme "Peace is the Future."
