Secularization, Laicite, and Religion

Author: José Casanova

January 1, 2014

The essays in Secularization, Laïcité, and Religion (Secularización, Laicidad y Religión, published in Spanish) are based on a seminar conducted by José Casanova at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain in October 2012. This book argues that the traditional paradigms of laïcité and secularism must be reconsidered in the contemporary world. This process necessitates a paradigm shift about the modern nation-state that permits the cultural and religious pluralism that are facts of life in the globalized world. In his chapter "Secularization and Laïcité in Spain and Europe: A Global Comparative Perspective," Casanova conducts a comparative analysis of secularization in Spain, Europe, and the rest of the world and describes what Habermas calls the "post-secular global society."
