Universities and the Future of America

January 1, 1990

In Universities and the Future of America, former Harvard University president Derek Bok explains how American colleges and universities can work to make a positive impact on society by addressing challenges in government, public education, poverty, illiteracy, drug abuse, joblessness, and family issues. Bok believes that these institutions of higher learning can and should promote ethical behavior and social responsibility by working with foundations and government agencies to further a “broad agenda of reform.” This book serves as a sequel to Bok’s 1982 volume, Beyond the Ivory Tower: Social Responsibilities of the Modern University.
