The Tanakh is the Hebrew Bible, constituting the entire canon of divinely revealed scripture in Judaism. The Tanakh is divided into three parts: Torah (“Teaching”) - five books ascribed to Moses, covering the founding legal codes of Jewish law and a religious account of Jewish history from creation until the Hebrews’ arrival in the Land of Israel; Nevi’im (“Prophets”) - eight books covering prophetic exhortations and Jewish history from the Hebrews’ arrival in Israel until the Babylonian Captivity; and Ketuvim (“Writings”) - eleven books of diverse content. Jewish tradition holds that a group of prophets, sages, and scribes known as the Great Assembly compiled and codified the Tanakh in 450 BCE, though most scholars believe its codification occurred between the 2nd century BCE and the 2nd century CE.
