The Irvine Dialogue: Why Israel? Why Palestine?

May 7, 2006
The Cordoba Initiative, the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA), and the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership (CLAL) sponsored a conference at the University of California-Irvine entitled "Why Israel? Why Palestine" in May of 2006. In an effort to identify and illuminate cultural foundations of the Israel/Palestine debate, the dialogue consisted of six lecturers, three representing each side, who gave personal and informed narratives of this debate. Israeli Brigadier General Michel Herzog, CLAL Vice President Rabbi Bradley Hirschfield, and Washington Institute for Near East Policy Executive Director Robert Satloff presented the Israeli view, while al-Quds University President Sari Nusseibeh, ASMA President Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, and University of Maryland Professor Shibley Telhami presented the Palestinian perspective.
