Acholi Religious Leaders Peace Initiative
Founded in 1997, the Acholi Religious Leaders Peace Initiative (ARLPI) is an interfaith forum of Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Christian leaders dedicated to providing community-based mediation, advocacy, and peace-building activities to conflicts in northern Uganda (Acholiland). Initially chaired by the Anglican Bishop in Uganda, ARLPI first launched a peace conference discussing the causes and effects of the war and ways to resolve it; as a result ARLPI has supported a constructive dialogue between the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and government leaders. It also supports women's empowerment by promoting women's participation and empowerment throughout its activities. The organization has been awarded the Niwano Peace Prize (2004), Paul Carus Award (2004), and Peace Award of URI Africa (2008); the Niwano Prize money has been used to fund the construction of a peace center in Gulu.
