American Baptist Churches USA
The American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA) is the fifth-largest Baptist Christian denomination in the United States, with approximately 1.3 million members across 5,500 congregations. ABCUSA’s predecessor body was reorganized and thus renamed in 1972. It is the most recent iteration of the Triennial Convention, from which the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Baptist denomination in the United States, separated in 1845 over a slavery-related conflict. American Baptists prioritize social equality, which is reflected in their focus on racial inclusion and ordaining of women. Denomination-wide decisions are made by a General Board and implemented by the Office of the General Secretary, but because American Baptists emphasize individual church autonomy, these policies are not binding. ABCUSA encourages evangelism and missionary work.
