Pakistan Muslim League
The Pakistan Muslim League (PML) is an influential political party that (as the Muslim League) was a driving force behind Pakistan's independence from India in 1947. Since then, PML splintered, with the Pakistan Muslim League - Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q) as the dominant faction. PML-Q officially affirms its support for parliamentary democracy and does not advocate the implementation of Shari'ah law. Moreover, the party respects the rights of Pakistan's religious minorities, as well as freedoms of press, speech, and expression, and women's equality, and promotes agriculture as the backbone of the Pakistani economy. In 2002 the party gained a plurality of seats (126 of 342) in the Pakistani National Assembly; PML-Q contested the February 2008 parliamentary elections in alliance with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Pakistan Muslim League (F), and the National Peoples Party. PML-Q was the party of then President General Pervez Musharraf.
