United Church of Canada
The United Church of Canada (UCC) is the largest Protestant denomination in Canada, with approximately 3 million members. The denomination formed in 1925 following the merger of Methodist, Congregational, and Presbyterian groups; later talks with the Anglican Church of Canada and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) ultimately did not result in greater union. One major focus of UCC's overseas partnerships has been gender justice and the role the church can play in its development. Its social justice work also addresses climate change, health care and HIV/AIDS, human rights, disarmament and peace, and support for and reconciliation with First Nations peoples. UCC is a member of the Canadian Council of Churches, KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, World Alliance of Reformed Churches, World Methodist Council, and World Council of Churches, and involved in dialogues with Anglican, Roman Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim partners.
