Franz Rosenzweig
Franz Rosenzweig was a prominent German Jewish theologian and philosopher. He was born in Germany in 1886 to a largely unobservant Jewish family. After he decided to begin his religious life as an Orthodox Jew as a first step toward Christianity, a mystical experience inspired him to fully and permanently embrace Orthodox Judaism. He wrote his greatest work, The Star of Redemption, while a soldier in World War I. He opposed Zionism in favor of a German-Jewish culture and spiritual understanding of the Jewish nation. In spite of philosophical and ideological differences, he befriended Martin Buber and the two produced a German translation of the Torah. He also founded the Lehrhaus, a nationally known German-Jewish educational center. His published correspondences with Jewish convert to Christianity Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy are considered critical in the study of modern Jewish-Christian understanding. Rosenzweig died in 1929 of Lou Gehrig’s disease.
