Hamam Said

The Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood’s Consultative Council narrowly elected Hamam Said as its head in 2008. Said is of Palestinian origin and ascended to his position thanks to the support of the Muslim Brotherhood’s hardliner faction, which favor a strengthened partnership between Jordan and Hamas. His strong support for Hamas has positioned him in direct opposition to King Abdullah II and Jordanian state policy, which outlaws Hamas and supports current Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, leader of Hamas’ chief rival, the Fatah party. One of King Abdullah II’s most vocal opponents, Said repeatedly has called for a popular movement to unseat Middle Eastern leaders who share close relationships with the United States. Said maintains a close relationship with Khaled Meshaal, the leader of Hamas who was arrested and expelled from Jordan in 1999 for threatening the Israel-Jordan Peace Agreement.
