Prime Minister of Ukraine on two separate occasions (2005, 2007-10), Yulia Tymoshenko leads the opposition to President Yanukovych within the Ukrainian parliament. Located on the economically liberal and Ukranian-philic side of the Ukrainian political spectrum, Tymoshenko has been intensely critical of Yanukovych’s presidency and condemned his alleged attempts to limit freedom of speech and press. Tymoshenko maintains cordial relations with the two main Orthodox churches in Ukraine as well as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, but is most closely associated with the Kiev Patriarchate, receiving its highest award for her service to the Ukrainian people and congratulating Patriarch Filaret for his efforts to establish an independent Ukrainian church.
