Religion and Humanitarianism: Floating Boundaries in a Globalizing World

October 11, 2009
The Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs report, "Religion and Humanitarianism: Floating Boundaries in a Globalizing World," reviews and summarizes the conference on "Religion, Secularism, and Humanitarianism: Exploring Differences, Boundaries, and Connections." The conference was aimed at reducing collective ignorance surrounding the relationship between religion and humanitarianism. The report explores three main themes identified during the conference: 1) the shifting boundaries between religion and secularism and the enduring presence of faith, 2) the apparent victory of religion over secularism, and 3) the challenging search to develop a framework that is broadly accepted in a diverse world. It concludes by exploring the range of new questions raised and advocating additional conversations. The report was prepared by Michael Barnett, Denis Kennedy, Janice Stein, and Laura Thaut and supported by the Luce Initiative on Religion and International Affairs.
