Courtyard of the Gentiles

The Catholic Church in dialogue

The Courtyard of the Gentiles is an ongoing initiative of the Roman Catholic Church, led by the Pontifical Council for Culture and its president, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi. Pope Benedict XVI first suggested the initiative, named for the portion of the Temple of Jerusalem where pagans could discuss issues of faith with Jews, in a speech to the Roman Curia in 2009. The chief mission of the Courtyard of the Gentiles is to encourage dialogue between believers of all faiths and nonbelievers, often in the form of discussions between Cardinal Ravasi and secular professors. Hosted in different cities, the Courtyards have often tended to focus on the specific issues faced within the host country, and participants have oftentimes found common ground in discussing the role of religion in music, art, and architecture. This collection provides an overview of each meeting. The next Courtyard of the Gentiles meeting will consider the theme of “Faith, Culture, and the Common Good.” Hosted by Georgetown University in partnership with the Archdiocese of Washington, the Pontifical Council for Culture, the Kennedy Center, and the Library of Congress, the meeting will be held from April 9 to 11, 2014.
