International Prayer for Peace - 2008

November 16-18, 2008

The 2008 International Prayer for Peace celebrated the theme "The Civilization of Peace: Faith and Cultures in Dialogue." The Cyprus location embodied both the challenges and hopes of interfaith dialogue, with a 40-member interfaith delegation making a symbolic crossing of the Green line barrier separating the Turkish and Greek parts of the island. Under the leadership of Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus, the Orthodox Archdiocese of Cyprus played a central role in hosting and leading the event in cooperation with the Community of Sant'Egidio. Panel discussions explored multiple topics, including culture and peace in the Mediterranean, welcoming the stranger, Christianity and violence, monasticism, ecumenical unity, Asian religions in economic development, peace in the Middle East, and Christian dialogue with Jews and Muslims. The event culminated in a Peace Procession and the official proclamation of the 2008 Appeal for Peace.
