Pacem in Terris Remarks: Andrea Riccardi

Professor Andrea Riccardi, the founder of the Community of Sant'Egidio, spoke at Georgetown in 2004 as part of the Pacem in Terris Lecture Series, after receiving an honorary degree. Riccardi spoke on the importance and necessity of individuals in truly understanding history, war, and peace. Riccardi said that peace was a key part of Jesus' mission for the Church, and has battled mankind's desire for it throughout modern history. He explained that Sant'Egidio stood as an extension of that mission, both against violence and poverty, which he describes as a form of violence. The Community of Sant'Egidio is a lay Roman Catholic association of more than 40,000 members dedicated to prayer, communicating the gospel, solidarity with the poor, ecumenism, and dialogue,
