Religion Revisited: Women's Rights and the Political Instrumentalism of Religion
June 5- 6, 2009
Sponsored by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development and Heinrich Böll Foundation, the conference "Religion Revisited: Women's Rights and the Political Instrumentalism of Religion" was part of the organization's Religion, Politics and Gender Equality project and considered how religions influence the fight for women's rights. More specifically, conference participants discussed which model can best support women's rights and gender equality: strict separation between religion and politics, or global recognition of public religions. Participants hailed from Germany, India, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, United Kingdom, and the United States, including the Berkley Center's own Jose Casanova.
