Religion, Secularism, and the End of the West

June 3, 2005

The University of Virginia and Pew Charitable Trusts hosted a conference in Vienna, Austria that examined the history and future of the concept of "the West." Panelists presented papers that discussed the degree to which Western Christianity shaped and continues to shape the identity of the West as a region; others discussed the influence of the Cold War, the Greco-Roman cultural legacy, the Enlightenment, and Western modernity. Some panelists remarked on the linkages between Europe's identity crisis and the larger crisis of the West.
