It is now commonplace that religion is resurgent around the world. Evidence is everywhere, from American domestic politics to the Middle East and beyond. But skeptics remain. Some see politics as a game of power and interests with religion as a sideshow. Others acknowledge the increasing visibility of religion in politics, but dismiss it as ideological cover for other purposes.
The Berkley Center's Timothy Shah has co-authored a major new book that addresses the skeptics head on. God's Century: Resurgent Religion in Global Politics (Norton 2011) provides a compelling analysis of religion's impact across a range of issues including war and peace, human rights, and America's role in the world. Shah and his co-authors, Daniel Philpott and Monica Toft, describe and explain the political flourishing of religion amid globalization and democratization – against the expectations of the secularization thesis.
The Center will be hosting a lunch seminar and book launch with the authors of God's Century on Wednesday, March 23 from 12-2pm. Ross Douthat of the New York Times will serve as discussant and Michael Cromartie of the Ethics & Public Policy Center will serve as moderator. You can RSVP here.
