The Elisabeth University of Music is a private Jesuit university in Hiroshima, Japan dedicated to promoting music as a pathway to humanistic and spiritual development. While the original academic program was founded in 1948, Elisabeth University was not officially chartered as a university until 1963. The university was named for Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, who was a patron of the school in the 1950s. The school has almost 600 students, both undergraduate and graduate, with a complete academic focus on musical studies. The university has a joint program with the Vatican's Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music. The university is currently located adjacent to the Peace Memorial Cathedral.
