The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), established in 1978, aims to reduce the effects of catastrophes and relieve human suffering regardless of one's religious affiliation. The society contributes to social and humanitarian services in agreement with the mission of its parent organization, the Red Crescent. As the first voluntary charity organization in the state of Qatar, the society has become very active in providing assistance and establishing relief programs in disaster-affected areas around the world. In 2001, QRCS donated more than CHF 449,000 to several relief programs. It also participated with other NGOs in Qatar in dispatching emergency relief to Afghanistan. QRCS also conducts local emergency relief and is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Federation.
