Ramakrishna Math and Mission
Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are complementary (but legally separate) organizations founded by Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda to promote religious and cultural harmony, social equality, human development, and world peace. The Math is a men's monastic organization, while the Mission is open to both monks and lay devotees interested in social service; they operate 171 centers worldwide. (Sri Sarada Math and Ramakrishna Sarada Mission are corollary independent organizations open to women.) Both Math and Mission work to celebrate the potential divinity within each individual, highlight the universal reality underlying all religions, alleviate human suffering, and promote the common welfare whenever possible. Areas of service include a wide range of medical and educational institutions, disaster relief, empowerment in rural and tribal areas, and programs for women and youth. The Ramakrishna Math and Mission also support cultural activities and the celebration of holy days, along with extensive literature publication.
