United Nations Children's Fund

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) connects and facilitates global efforts to protect and care for children. Initiatives fall into one of several cross-cutting focal areas: child protection and inclusion, child survival, education, gender, research and innovation, emergency response, and supply and logistics. Within this rubric programs address specific areas like early childhood development, access to clean water and sanitation, immunization, research and analysis on the role of children and women in society, and education programs that promote universal basic education, improve the quality of basic education and retention rates, and ensure education in times of crisis. HIV/AIDS initiatives use a gender-sensitive approach to improve health care and education among women and children, while child protection efforts ensure gender-appropriate mechanisms are in place for children involved in national justice systems. UNICEF partners with religious communities to promote children's well-being.
