United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization

Founded in 1945, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) works to foster a universal respect for the rule of law and the rights of individuals recognized by the UN Charter through the advancement of global cooperation in education, science, communication, information sharing, and cultural exchange. Along with the rest of the UN system, its work also supports the Sustainable Development Goals. Its current efforts emphasize promoting peace and equitable and sustainable development through a strategic focus on Africa and gender equality. Encouraging intercultural and interreligious dialogue is another focus of the organization; programs have included a network of UNESCO Chairs of Interreligious Dialogue for Intercultural Understanding, the Dialogue of Civilizations Project, and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.
