Gary Johnson is a businessman and Libertarian Party nominee for president in the 2016 election, having made an unsuccessful bid in 2012. He served as the governor of New Mexico from 1995 to 2003 as a member of the Republican Party. Johnson is the founder of Big J Enterprises, a multimillion-dollar corporation and one of New Mexico’s largest construction companies. Though Johnson was raised a Lutheran, he rarely speaks openly about his faith on the campaign trail and has said that his personal views on religion do not influence his political agenda. As a presidential candidate, Johnson supports most Libertarian positions, including endorsing same-sex marriage and pro-choice policies, though he advocates states’ rights to govern access to abortions. He is fiscally conservative and strongly opposes expanding the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and Social Security, citing the urgent need to balance the federal budget. Johnson holds a B.S. in political science from the University of New Mexico.
