Ma Tong (Abu Joseph Ma Tong) is a specialist on Islam in China, the history of the Hui people, and Chinese Sufism. He is the former director of the Institute of Ethnicity Studies in Gansu and researcher of the Guansu Art and History Museum. Ma’s A Brief History of Chinese Islamic Schools and Institutions (1983, published in Chinese) is regarded as groundbreaking in the field. He is also the author of Features of Islam in Northwest China (2000, published in Chinese). Ma was born in 1929 in Zhangjiachuan of Gansu province in western China and studied law at Northwest University in Xi’an.
