Monsignor Michel Sabbah is the Latin Patriarch Emeritus for Jerusalem, Palestine, Jordan, and Cyprus and was President of Pax Christi International from 1999 till 2007; he also formerly served as president of the Middle East Council of Churches. Coming from a region where violence and bloodshed engulfs the lives of so many people, Msgr. Sabbah tenaciously called the attention of the international community to the root causes of hatred and violence, such as the worsening disparities between the rich and the poor, the denial of human dignity, and the lack of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. A signatory to the "Kairos Palestine" statement, he never ceases to call for greater justice to the Palestinian people and has condemned violence so that Israelis and Palestinians can live together in peace and mutual trust.
