Muhammad al-Bukhari was the author of the first of six "canonical" collections of Sunni hadith, the sayings and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad. Born of Persian ancestry in Bukhara in what is now Uzbekistan, al-Bukhari traveled extensively in the Islamic world in order to collect hundreds of thousands of hadith before choosing only what he deemed the most authentic to include in his Jami'a al-Sahih (popularly known as Sahih Bukhari). Al-Bukhari lived from approximately 810 to 870 CE.
