Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was the seventeenth prime minster of Pakistan, who was appointed to lead the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), the then-ruling party of Pakistan, in 2008. Before serving as prime minster, Ashraf held other cabinet positions under Yousaf Raza Gillani as minister for Water and Power and minister of Information Technology. Ashraf has been accused of engaging in widespread corruption while a cabinet minister, and in January 2013 the Supreme Court of Pakistan issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of corruption. Ashraf's government stepped down in March 2013 in preparation for elections in May, which saw the PPP lose power to the rival Pakistan Muslim League (N).
