His Excellence Shaykh Ravil Gainutdin has served as the grand mufti of Russia since 1996. He has served as imam of Kazan Cathedral Mosque and Moscow Cathedral Mosque. As a representative of the Muslim community before the Russian government, he has spoken out against terrorism and emphasized the constructive role played by Muslims in historical and contemporary Russia. Gainutdin was born in Tatarstan, Russia in 1959 and studied at the Islamic school, Mir Arab, in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. He was one of the 138 Muslim signatories in October 2007 of A Common Word Between Us and You, a letter addressed to Christian leaders in an appeal for peace and cooperation between the two religions.
