Rowan Williams is a professor and thirty-fifth Master at Magdalene College, Cambridge, and the former archbishop of Canterbury, a position he held from 2002 to 2012. Ordained in the Church of England in 1980, he taught at Cambridge and Oxford before becoming bishop of Monmouth in 1992 and archbishop of Wales in 2000. As archbishop of Canterbury, Williams developed a number of initiatives focused on improving Christian-Muslim relations, including the annual Building Bridges Seminar. He has written on a wide range of topics, and his publications include On Augustine (2016), The Edge of Words: God and the Habits of Language (2014), Tokens of Trust: An Introduction to Christian Belief (2007), and On Christian Theology (2000). Williams earned a B.A. from Christ's College at the University of Cambridge and D.Phil. from Wadham College at the University of Oxford. Upon his retirement as archbishop, Williams was made a life peer, styled Baron Williams of Oystermouth.
