Wu Yungui is a senior scholar of Islamic studies. Born in 1939 in Liaoning province, he graduated from the Foreign Language Department of Liaoning University in 1964 and subsequently worked at the Institute of World Religions at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He served as the head of the institute and vice president of the Chinese Religious Studies Association before retirement. His most significant works include Essentials of the Sharia (1993, published in Chinese) and A History of Islam (1990, co-author, published in Chinese).
