Roman Catholic Dialogue with the Baptist World Alliance
The fraternal exchange of delegates has brought the Baptist World Alliance and the Roman Catholic Church together since 1985. Official dialogue from 1984 to 1988 resulted in the 1990 report "Summons to Witness to Christ in Today's World." Baptist opposition then stalled talks until 2000, when informal consultations resumed. In 2003 a Roman Catholic-Baptist gathering considered the Roman Catholic-Lutheran "Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification"; the Baptist participants expressed full agreement with certain sections and serious reservations about others, especially those concerning baptism. The second round of dialogue (2006-2010) focused on the relationship between scripture and tradition, as well as the place of baptism and other sacraments in Christian life, and it resulted in the 2013 release of the report "The Word of God in the Life of the Church," which systematically outlines particular areas of convergence and difference between the two traditions.
