Evangelii Gaudium (On the Proclamation of the Gospel in Today's Word)
Author: Pope Francis
November 24, 2013
The second major document written by Pope Francis, apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (On the Proclamation of the Gospel in Today's Word) reflects and expands on the call to evangelization issued by the 2012 Synod of Bishops. The introduction encourages readers to daily encounter Jesus Christ. Five main sections address the church's missionary transformation, the crisis of communal commitment, proclamation of the Gospel, the social dimension of evangelization, and becoming spirit-filled evangelizers. Within this framework, Pope Francis focuses on the reform of the Church in its missionary outreach; the temptations faced by pastoral workers; the Church, understood as the entire people of God which evangelizes; and the homily and its preparation. He also covers the inclusion of the poor in society, peace and dialogue in society, and the spiritual motivations for mission. The exhortation concludes with a call to reflect the model of Mary, Mother of God, in this work.
