From Practice to Policy to Practice: Connecting Faith and Conservation in Africa
January 1, 2011
This USAID paper provides an analysis of the potential of collaboration between faith-based organizations, USAID, and other secular organizations on conservation initiatives in Africa. It highlights the opportunity for exchange between USAID’s expertise in the technicalities of biodiversity conservation and the established work of faith-based actors on the ground. The report offers an explanation of the connection between faith and conservation efforts, examples of existing faith-based efforts, and the U.S. government’s engagement with faith-based initiatives. It also discusses faith-secular partnerships at the United Nations, the World Bank, World Wildlife Fund, and the Alliance of Religions and Conservation among others, and concludes with opportunities and next steps for increased integration.
