Gender, HIV, and the Church
March 1, 2009
This case study outlines a joint initiative conducted by Tearfund and Christian Aid Taskforce (CAT) in Zimbabwe and Vigilance in Burkina Faso to address common misconceptions of gender status and male-female relationships by working with churches. Through Bible study groups, they used biblical examples to show people that gender equality is supported in the Bible and that men and women should not be ashamed in their relationships. These case studies were the result of a two-year pilot project to engage local churches on gender issues. The program took a holistic approach, examining gender inequality and HIV within the wider context of relationships, life skills, and Christian life.
