Speech to Participants in the Conference on International Religious Freedom and the Global Clash of Values
June 20, 2014
In this speech Pope Francis affirms the importance of religious liberty in promoting the common good. He first highlights the way religious liberty creates space for humanity to wrestle with questions of meaning and existence, subsequently arguing that religious freedom must create space for action as well as thought. Pope Francis then addresses the role of religious liberty in framing the relationship between church and state. He concludes by lamenting discrimination and persecution on the basis of religion. Pope Francis delivered this speech to the International Congress organized by the Department of Jurisprudence of Libera Università Maria Ss. Assunta and of St. John’s School of Law on "Religious Liberty According to International Law and the Global Conflict of Values."
