United Church of Christ Divestment Resolution
July 1, 2013
This resolution, passed by the 29th General Synod of the United Church of Christ at its Massachusetts Conference in June 2013, declares the congregation’s divestment from fossil fuels. The document, which was officially implemented on July 1, 2013, also describes other methods, such as individual members’ actions, that can mitigate the growing problem of climate change. Potential strategies include taking steps within homes, businesses, and churches to reduce carbon footprints, calling for legislative action against climate change, and boycotting or advocating for fossil fuel divestment. By passing the resolution with an overwhelming affirmative vote, the organization became the first national faith communion to agree to divest from fossil fuel companies.
