Rand Paul on How Some Christians' Apparent Eagerness for War Is Damaging the Republican Party

April 10, 2013

When we talk about war, that I think part of Republicans problems and frankly to tell you the truth some in the evangelical Christian movement I think have appeared too eager for war. [...] When I read the New Testament, when I read about Jesus, he wasn't really involved with a war of his days. In fact people rebuked him for not being the king they wanted. [...] We're talking about 'Blessed are the Peacemakers' not 'Blessed are the Warmakers.’ That doesn’t mean that we don’t have a strong national defense but we should be, at least I think the Republican Party needs to be the Party that is a reluctant party to go to war who believes in a strong national defense because it's a prevention of war not because it allows us to go and be involved in war everywhere and we've got to have boots on the ground.
